Chad

We were travelling from Lyba to Central African Republic, but at this moment we stopped for a few days in Chad. Chad is long seen by travelers as a place to get through rather than a place to visit. Otherwise we think that it’s a beautiful place to visit a few days. We will spend a couple of days in N’Djaména, this is a busy broken-down capital on the way between Niger and Cameroon. Chad is bordered by Libya to the north, Sudan to the east, the Central African Republic to the south, Cameroon and Nigeria to the southwest and Niger to the west. The official languages in Chad are Arabic and French. Islam and Christianity are the most widely practiced religions.

Chad is well known for its endless Sahelien, but also boat rides on Lade Chad or strolling the shady streets of southern towns. Chad is a bit smaller than Peru but also a bit bigger than South Africa. Lake Chad, after which the country is named, is an immense lake that occupied 330,000 square kilometers of the Chad Basin. The lake is Africa’s second largest wetland.

At this moment it’s a tropical weather over here. From May to October there is a wet season in the south and from June to September in the Sahel. I’ve already seen a rich cultural heritage because of its great variety of peoples and languages.

Today we will go to Cameroon. After the border formalities we will drive north towards Kousseri, the second largest freshwater lake in the African continent, Lake Chad. We will drive through a beautiful hard and varied landscape. In and around the lake we will see many species of birds and other wildlife animals such as crocodiles. The lake is also full of fish. A man told us already that the fish is the main food of the local population, every morning the population caught many fish so that they can feed their families. After the visit of the lake we will go to a hotel in Bangloua.

Tomorrow we will go from Blangoua, situated on the banks of the Chari River, to the island of Pirogue Kofia for the weekly fish market. In the afternoon we will go to the nicest park in West-Africa: called Waza. There we will drive in the park and we will see a lot of lions, elephants, giraffes and other various animals. Tonight we will make another trip through the park looking for the antelopes and elephants.

On day three we will travel from Waza to Pouss where we will visit a unique Tuesday market. It will be a very colorful scene. We will also visit the Mouskom with the original architecture. On the same day we will also visit Oudjilla an authentic village. We will finish the day in Mokolo, a quiet town. The town is famous for its lively market.

The last day we will stop to the Mandarage. In Tourou we will visit again a particular market and finally we will reach the Kapsiki area, where the chimneys of eroded volcanic put like peaks in the air that is one of the most breathtaking landscapes of the entire African continent.

That will be our travel through Chad. I hope you have enough information about our trip so that you can have an idea of what we will see in this country.

I will tell you a new story in a few weeks.

Greetz – Jolien Masscheleyn
